White Rhinos at Al Ain Zoo

Al Ain, March 15, 2008

Al Ain Zoo will be exclusively displaying five white Rhinos in the mixed African exhibit as part of their continuing rapid improvement programme.

White Rhinos are the largest of the Rhino species and range through the grasslands of Eastern and Southern Africa.

The Rhinos were brought from South Africa three months ago and have been isolated for quarantine purposes and for them to slowly get used to their new surroundings in the new mixed African exhibit, said an official spokesman.

“The arrival of the five white rhinos demonstrates our commitment to conserving threatened species, as well as the integration of wildlife education for all our visitors by edifying them on different aspects of desert wild life. The increase in the number of visitors to the zoo mirrors our continuous efforts in making significant changes to our zoo  in order to enhance the visitor’s experience which is unique in the UAE,” said Al Ain Zoo managing director Majid Al Mansouri.

Al Ain Zoo rooted at the heart of Al Ain is undergoing a series of rapid improvements that has seen the zoo change into a much more family friendly place where all visitors can connect with wildlife.

The panoramic mountain backdrop and amazing landscape of the Al Ain Zoo has been used to great advantage for the newly arrived Rhinos. Their new exhibit with rocky, sandy ridges, set at the foothills of Jabel Hafeet makes the new four hectares Rhino exhibit very representative of South Africa.

The Al Ain Zoo endeavors to conserve and protect endangered species and the white rhino is no exception. There are about 11,300 white rhinos in the wild today but their population has rapidly declined due to poaching and habitat loss

The White Rhinos average lifespan in the wild is 35 to 40 years and they breed throughout the year but mostly in summer and autumn. A new-born Rhino can weight up to 40 kg. – TradeArabia News Service
