Oman cancels Muscat Festival on flu fears

Muscat, September 17, 2009

Oman has cancelled the sultanate's biggest annual event due to fears about the pandemic H1N1 swine flu as the death toll in the country reached 18, the event organisers said on Thursday.

"The Muscat Festival 2010, being a major event in Oman, is cancelled to stop the spread of H1NI," Sultan bin Hamdoun Al Harthy, chairman of Muscat Municipality, the organisers of the event, said in a statement.

The month-long festival is held every January and attracts two million foreign visitors every year, mainly from the neighbouring countries, include the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, according to the municipality.

Oman has reported nearly 2,000 cases and 18 deaths from the H1N1 virus so far. - Reuters
