A Turkish ship heading for India has been hijacked off the coast of Yemen, state-run Anatolian news agency said on Wednesday.

The Karagol, with 14 Turkish crew on board, was transporting chemicals to the port of Bombay when it was hijacked by unidentified attackers.

Last month pirates in Somalia hijacked a Turkish ship off the lawless Horn of Africa country.

Somali pirates have been causing havoc in one of the world's busiest shipping areas connecting Europe to Asia and the Middle East, taking millions in ransoms, hiking insurance costs, and threatening humanitarian supplies.

Most attacks have been in the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and north Somalia, a major route leading to the Suez canal linking Europe and Asia.-Reuters
