Siemens, a global technology powerhouse, said it has won a major contract from the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for the turnkey construction of three substations in Qatar in addition to a deal to supply air-insulated switchgear.

As per the deal, the company will supply three 132/11 kV substations as part of Phase Two of the Qatar power transmission system expansion project.

The first substation, Al Wukair-1, will be located inside Al Wakra Stadium Boulevard, 10 km from Doha. The second, Al Heedan, will be at the proposed Al Khor Stadium and the third, Learaig, is to be constructed at Salwa Beach Resort near Qatar’s border with Saudi Arabia, said Siemens in a statement.

The substations, which will support power supply for residential, commercial and industrial applications in Qatar, including two new sports stadiums, are likely to be completed within 15 months, it added.

Each of the turnkey 132-kV substations comprises Siemens 8DN8 132-kV gas-insulated switchgear, four 40 MVA power transformers, two boards of 11-kV switchgear, station auxiliary transformers, complete protection and substation control system, associated low-voltage (LV), power and control cables and high-voltage cable diversion works.

Siemens said it has also been awarded an additional contract by the Qatari utility for 654 NX Air 11-kV air-insulated switchgear, inclusive of protection for secondary distribution, for greater reliability and stability of Qatar’s electricity network.

The Siemens switchgear will be installed over a two-year period, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
