Dubai Sports City signs up BMTC for street lighting

DUBAI, May 23, 2017

Dubai Sports City said it has signed a partnership deal with Bahri & Mazroei Trading Company (BMTC), a leading provider of lighting, electrical and water solutions, for supply of solar power for the community development.

The project will include the replacement of existing lighting, designing of uniform lighting levels, adding new lighting poles, supplying, installing and commissioning of LED (light-emitting diode) luminaires, solar panels, and controls as well as maintaining the complete system.

Additionally, solar energy will be supplied to the advertising panels on the street lighting poles, said a statement from Dubai Sports City.

The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce dependence on energy-intensive traditional street lighting solutions.

Dubai Sports City will be provided with LED lighting, dimming controls, remote monitoring including proactive maintenance alerts with a 100 percent pure solar powered solution, it stated.

On the partnership, Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, the manager and partner of Dubai Sports City, said: "This is a landmark achievement which aligns with Dubai Government’s directive to encourage greener communities which, in the long run, are self-sustainable."

The contract between Dubai Sports City and BMTC is based on the Esco model which includes financing over a long-term period and the payback is based on the savings, stated Falaknaz.

As per the partnership deal, BMTC will be responsible for maintenance and service of the installed system.

The company was chosen for this prestigious project for its impressive credentials as it is the only provider with proven expertise in both public road lighting, renewable lighting solutions combined with advanced control and automation technologies, he noted.

Esam Al Mazroei, the vice chairman of Bahri & Mazroei Group, said BMTC is scheduled to commence work in the first week of June in partnership with Schréder, the top-quality provider and performer of outdoor luminaires.

"We are delighted to partner with Dubai Sports City for such a prestigious, and first of its kind model project, that serves to be a testimony to BMTC’s capabilities in delivering renewable energy street lighting. Recognised by the Roads & Transport Authority, our LED lighting and solar street lighting solutions will meet Dubai Sports City’s goals for energy-efficient and environment-friendly lighting," he added.

BMTC said it will also provide its smart controller that can perform remote monitoring, data transfer and analysis of the various individual components installed, thus contributing to greater operational efficiency.

By leveraging the big data, Dubai Sports City will have real-time information on the performance of the lighting systems, which can be updated and modified as per requirement.

Kevin J Brennan, the general manager of facilities for Dubai Sports City, said: "This is a major step forward in the our strategy to be self-sustaining as far as possible. It has taken a huge effort from both teams to reach this green energy solution."

"The installation of solar street lights will also reduce our carbon footprint and save money for the city. We are now looking at significantly extending our use of solar power within the city to further our self-sustaining strategy and deliver cost effective smart energy solutions to our residents," he added.

BMTC, in conjunction with Dubai Sport City’s technical team, have conducted a comprehensive study of the existing road network as part of the project to identify the most efficient renewable energy solution for street lighting. The new project will replace the generators that are currently being used to power street lights.-TradeArabia News Service
