Suqia, Dewa partner for water desal project

DUBAI, May 29, 2017

UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia) has partnered with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) to develop a reverse osmosis water desalination plant at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, UAE.

The project, which reflects Suqia’s efforts in research and development to find sustainable and innovative solutions to the scarcity of clean water, relies on a hybrid energy system combining photovoltaic cells (100 kW) and power storage system (batteries) with a capacity of 520 kWh.

The cooperation aims to raise awareness on the importance of finding sustainable and effective solutions to serve the drought-stricken areas and to highlight the role of renewable energy in achieving sustainable development, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, chairman of UAE Water Aid Foundation and MD & CEO of Dewa.

“This is part of Suqia’s commitment towards strengthening the global role of our leadership in addressing the challenges facing humanity, and providing support and humanitarian assistance throughout the world, in line with the 2030 agenda of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” he added.

Furthermore, Dewa signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Khalifa University, to engage university students in this joint venture and to refine their skills in developing research projects in the field of clean energy and sustainability.

Students will benefit from the scientific research programmes, which will be developed by Dewa and Khalifa University. The two parties will cooperate in organising conferences, workshops, competitions, and related exhibitions, in addition to designing innovative training courses, as well as studying students’ projects and developing them.

Students and faculty members at Khalifa University conducted two field visits to the solar park to study the work of the station and discuss several joint projects proposed by the university, which Dewa intends to examine the feasibility of implementing, and developing a joint implementation plan.

This is the second joint project between Suqia and Dewa. Both parties had previously cooperated in the project of reverse osmosis desalination plant and solar photovoltaic with a capacity of 7.7 cu m per day. – TradeArabia News Service
