Egypt awards $13m contract to develop top museum

CAIRO, August 31, 2018

The Egyptian Ministry of Culture and a joint venture of Besix and Orascom have chosen Acciona Producciones y Diseño (APD) for the technical museographic development of four of the exhibit halls at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, in a contract worth €11 million ($13 million).

Acciona Producciones y Diseño will also make a 3D scan of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, allowing an exact replica of the original to be created for the museum’s visitors.

Acciona Producciones y Diseño will be responsible for the technical and museographic development of 12,000 sq m, distributed over four museum areas, in which APD will incorporate a variety of exhibition elements, such as graphics, models, life-sized reproductions and exhibition and staging lighting to support the story told by the museum and contextualize the archaeological pieces.

APD will also make a three-dimensional scan and carry out the photogrammetry for Tutankhamun’s outer burial chamber (scale and colour), to provide an exact digital model of the original that can be turned into a physical reproduction for future display at the museum.

The Grand Egyptian Museum will become the largest archaeological museum in the world, housing 45,000 pieces (of which 25,000 have never been exhibited before), showing the history of Ancient Egypt from Prehistory to the Greco-Roman period. The museum is expected to receive over five million visitors a year (around 15,000 a day).

The museum is located two kilometres from the Giza pyramids and will occupy 50 hectares of land. Some of the rooms will be open to visitors by 2019, with the final grand opening in late 2020.
