Bahrain IT recycling project in limelight

Manama, November 21, 2010

Bahrain's Recycle IT project will get international recognition at the second e-waste forum to be held in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Tuesday.

The scheme, implemented by Good Word Society under the patronage of Royal Charity Organisation (RCO) board of trustees chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, will be presented in hope of offering a role model for Gulf region and the Arab world.

The two-day event is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) Regional Office for West Asia in collaboration with the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe.

Project executive director Ahmed Buhazza said the forum would allow Bahrain to build relationships with participants and build bridges of co-operation with international institutions.

"The Recycle IT project will be presented as one of the success stories by an NGO," he said. "It is hoped to become a role model for countries in the region."

The event will be attended by government officials from several Arab countries, businessmen as well as representatives from environmental organisations and NGOs.

It will also feature the participation of more than 30 environmental experts.

The forum seeks to find innovative and competitive solutions in the field of e-waste management to create opportunities for green business as well as reviewing the success stories in e-waste management, creating employment opportunities, maintaining natural resources, and reversing the environmental hazards.

The Recycle IT project consists of awareness, training and reuse of old computers and is intended to establish the first centre in the GCC dedicated to recycle all ICT-related equipment.-TradeArabia News Service
