Umniah offers broadband to 80pc in Jordan

Amman, January 4, 2011

Umniah, a leading telecom service provider in Jordan, now provides its wireless broadband services to 80 per cent of the Kingdom’s population.

“We are very proud of this pioneering step, as it reflects our commitment to meeting the performance standards that the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has set and embodies our goals of catering to all local market segments and income groups, and making our Umax service available throughout the Kingdom at high quality and competitive prices,” said Ihab Hinnawi, Umniah’s CEO, at a meeting that was held at the company’s headquarters in Amman.

“Our efforts are designed to contribute to increasing Internet penetration in Jordan in line with His Majesty King Abdullah II’s directives to elevate the Jordanian telecom sector, and support the national ICT Strategy that aims to boost Internet penetration to 50 per cent by the end of 2011.”

“The expansion of our Umax service builds on our achievement of being the first to introduce WiMAX to the Jordanian telecom market,” he added.

He also stated that the company doubled the number of its Umax stations in Amman over the past few months and increased the number of its radio base stations based on the TRC’s requirements, as well as raised the number of Umniah’s towers in all governorates.

In addition, Hinnawi noted that Umniah is currently offering its Umax service in Jordan’s governorates at lower and highly competitive prices to cater to the purchasing power of all Jordanians.

Recent figures reveal that Umniah’s wireless broadband market share in Jordan has grown to exceed 20 per cent, while its coverage percentage in Amman currently stands at 95 per cent of the population, keeping in mind that the coverage percentage the TRC aims for as part of its performance indicators is more than 60 per cent before September 30.

In accordance with its expansion plans, Umniah recently introduced a new prepaid Umax promotion in the Kingdom’s governorates that it offers at speeds reaching up to 3Mbps. – TradeArabia News Service
