Lebanon's parliament has approved a new election law agreed under a deal that ended a deep political crisis, Lebanese media reported.

The law, which will adjust voting districts in line with the Qatari-mediated agreement, will be used as the basis for parliamentary election next year.

Parliament, which approved the law at an evening session, introduced minor changes to an earlier draft, Lebanese radio and television stations reported.

Approval of the law marks the last major component of the Doha agreement which ended 18 months of conflict between the Western-backed parliamentary majority and a minority coalition led by political and military group Hezbollah.

Espousing an anti-Damascus agenda, the alliance won its parliamentary majority in a 2005 election after the withdrawal of Syrian troops that had been in the country for three decades.

The rival alliances formed a national unity government in July that gave the Syria-backed minority effective veto power over cabinet decisions. The new cabinet was also agreed as part of the Doha agreement.-Reuters
