Hotel joins club's plastic bottles drive

Manama, March 1, 2012

Bahrain’s Delmon Hotel has joined Al Areen Lions Club’s charity campaign which focuses on collecting plastic bottles for a cause.

The club began collecting plastic bottles as part of a project, on behalf of the Bahrain Association for Parents and Friends of the Disabled (BAPFD), late 2011, when it sealed a deal with a local recycling company to receive money for every tonne of plastic that it turned over.

The money collected is then used to buy specialised wheelchairs to help disabled patients.

Since its inception, the programme has managed to attract a number of hotels and schools throughout the country. They collect their plastic bottles on a weekly/monthly basis and the club collects and delivers to the recycling company.

Club president Zuhair Uchi says the initiative, is becoming a huge success. “We are receiving almost five times more than what we started with. We are very happy with the response,” he said.

“Not only are we grateful for the hotels and schools that have jumped on the bandwagon, but individual household owners, who call us regularly to collect plastic bottles from their homes.”

Club committee member and project head Yousif Hubaishi said the project has grown beyond the club’s expectations.

So far Tatweer, Golden Tulip, eGovernment, Abdul Rahman Kanoo School, French School, Bahrain Polytechnic and College of Health and Science in Salmaniya and now the Delmon Hotel,  have joined the club’s programme.

The collection got to a stage where it was beyond BAPFD’s capabilities and had to enlist the help of others, which is where the club came in.

“We needed help and emailed Al Areen Lions Club asking it to help and it heeded our call with the collection and transportation of the plastic,” said BAPFD chairman Jassim Seyadi. “The drive is beneficial to Bahrain's environment as well as raising money for a worthy cause, the club has roared behind the drive.

A customised wheelchair can cost thousands of dinars and can be purchased after collecting around 12-15 tonnes of plastic.
“Every month, we obtain two to three tonnes of plastic. We are calling out for more people to donate,” added Seyadi.
