Tourism key to RAK economic diversfication

RAS AL KHAIMAH, October 25, 2015

Tourism plays a crucial role in the diversification of the economy, the generation of wealth and foreign investment and the sustainable growth of job creation, said a senior tourism official of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.

"As Ras Al Khaimah seeks to attract 1 million tourists by the end 2018, we continue to work closely with the public and private sector to position the emirate and the UAE as a dynamic and sustainable opportunity for tourism,” said Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.

He was speaking after inaugurating an official conference under the theme of “1 Billion Tourists, 1 Billion Opportunities” in recognition of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) World Tourism Day. The event was organised by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, in collaboration with the National Council of Tourism and Antiquities (NCTA).

Held on Al Marjan Island, the conference was attended by Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, and more than 300 delegates from the UAE trade, tourism and hospitality industry.
 
The event featured industry speakers such as Alfonso del Corral, head of Dubai operations, Safe Hotel Alliance; Rhea Saran, editor-in-chief, Condé Nast Traveler Middle East; Sean James, author and adventurer; and Urs Binggeli, senior expert of McKinsey & Company.

Speakers discussed the economic benefits of one billion tourists, the keys to sustainable job development, recent global tourism trends and effective strategies for destination management.

Mohammed Khamis Al Muhairi, director general, NCTA, said: "UNWTO World Tourism Day is an opportunity to present a unified image of the UAE to the world. As each emirate looks to boost tourism and enhance sustainability under the theme of '1 billion tourists, 1 billion opportunities', we support this initiative by Ras Al Khamiah Tourism Development Authority as a firm display of Emirati culture, heritage and unity."

World Tourism Day aims to promote responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism. The UNWTO initiative works to make tourism an effective tool for development and promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth and environmental sustainability, offering leadership and support to tourism policies worldwide. - TradeArabia News Service
