Widespread outages hit Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude

Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude suffered a broad service outage yesterday (March 2), disrupting access to its web interface, desktop applications and developer tools, said media reports.

Users across multiple regions reported widespread access failures that knocked out its web interface, desktop apps and developer tools, reported Impact newswire.

The disruption affected the main claude.ai chat platform, user login systems and the Claude Code coding environment, leaving thousands of users unable to access the service during peak hours. 

While some enterprise integrations connected via API remained functional, the interruption was significant enough to halt workflows for many everyday users and developers, it stated.

Anthropic’s status page initially cited “elevated errors on all platforms” as engineers worked through the morning to restore service following a widespread disruption to its Claude chatbot.

Users reported messages including “Claude will return soon — temporary service disruption,” alongside HTTP 500 and HTTP 529 server errors typically associated with overloaded systems. Outage-tracking site Downdetector showed a spike in complaints across Europe, India, Africa and the United States.

The problems were not confined to a single incident. Reports of a second disruption surfaced less than 24 hours later, raising questions about platform stability. Anthropic has yet to provide a detailed explanation of the root cause. Users took to social media to compare experiences and voice concerns about reliability.

The incident underscores the operational pressures facing AI developers as usage scales rapidly. Chatbots such as Claude are increasingly embedded in professional workflows spanning writing, research and software development, making downtime more consequential than a routine consumer app outage.

While Claude has been praised for its safety-first design and strong natural language capability, consistent performance and platform stability are equally important if it’s to compete with mainstream players. Frequent service disruptions — or even perceptions of instability — can make enterprise customers and developers hesitant to build critical systems on Claude’s backend. Anthropic will need to demonstrate robust uptime, transparent incident reporting and scalable infrastructure to match the expectations set by incumbents.

Meanwhile the Wall Street Journal has reported that Anthropic's AI was used in Iran strikes hours after President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to halt use of its AI tools.

The US military carried out a major airstrike on Iran that reportedly relied on the company’s Claude platform.

US Central Command used Claude for intelligence assessments, target identification and simulating battle scenarios during the Iran strikes, people familiar with the matter confirmed to the WSJ. 

Claude AI was also reportedly used in the US military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Trump's big move against Anthropic came on Friday as the company's CEO, Dario Amodei, rejected the Pentagon's demands to allow the military unrestricted use of its AI technology. 

He ordered most agencies to immediately stop Anthropic's AI use, but gave the Pentagon a six-month period to phase out the technology that is already embedded in military platforms.
