Maharlika Consortium begins $35m off-grid energy initiative

The Maharlika Consortium, through Archipelago Renewables Corporation (ARC and ARC II) and in partnership with WEnergy Global and CleanGrid Partners, has broken ground on 24 off-grid microgrids across the Philippines.

Backed by regulatory approvals, this $35 million investment marks the country’s largest private-sector rural electrification initiative.

The project will provide clean, reliable, 24/7 electricity to more than 11,500 households, benefiting over 50,000 people and local businesses in underserved communities across Palawan, Cebu, and Quezon.

It builds on the consortium’s experience operating the Sabang Microgrid since 2019.

Using advanced solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), hybrid generation, and smart distribution networks, the microgrids aim to deliver affordable and resilient power.

The portfolio includes 7 MWp of solar capacity, 8 MWh of battery storage, 3.5 MW of diesel backup, and 225 km of distribution infrastructure.

Awarded under government programs such as the Qualified Third Party Programme and the Microgrid Service Provider Act, the initiative supports national efforts to accelerate rural electrification and improve energy security.

It also reduces reliance on fuel subsidies by increasing the share of locally generated renewable energy.

Construction is expected to create around 300 jobs, with additional long-term roles for operations and maintenance.

The project has received strong support from local leaders and communities, highlighting its expected impact on education, livelihoods, and social development.

With phased development underway, the consortium aims to energise all target communities by 2026, contributing to the Philippines’ goal of achieving full household electrification while fostering sustainable economic growth. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
