NTT DOCOMO, PLDT and Smart Communications have demonstrated a renewable-energy system in the Philippines that uses weather forecasts to optimise battery charging and discharging at telecommunications base stations.

The technology, developed by DOCOMO for green base stations in Japan, was deployed outside Japan for the first time. Tests at two sites near Metro Manila and in Cebu showed solar-power utilisation efficiency rising 23 percentage points, from 38 per cent to 61 per cent.

The demonstration combines solar equipment, high-capacity lithium-ion batteries and DOCOMO’s Energy Management System, which uses weather and electricity-demand forecasts to manage power generation, storage and supply around the clock.

The system is designed to maintain stable communications during nighttime periods and power outages while reducing reliance on grid electricity and cutting CO₂ emissions.

PLDT said the initiative is the first in the Philippines to proactively optimise renewable generation, battery storage and power supply at telecommunications base stations using weather and demand forecasts.

The project forms part of DOCOMO and PLDT’s broader cooperation to decarbonise communications infrastructure and develop sustainable networks in the Philippines and surrounding markets. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
