Oman's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has signed an agreement with Arab Contractors Company to build a fishing port in the Wilayat of Mahout in Al Wusta Governorate, as part of efforts to develop the fisheries sector and attract investment.

The scope of work includes two breakwaters with a combined length of 3.02 km, land reclamation covering 1.2 million sq m area and dredging of the port basin over 688,116 sq m to a depth of up to 4m, reported ONA.

The project will also include 4.5 km roads and parking areas, as well as electricity, lighting, water, firefighting and sewage networks.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources Saud Hamoud Al Habsi and Arab Contractors Chairman Ahmed Mustafa Al Assar.

The project is intended to improve fish landing, handling and marketing operations and provide services for fishermen, while supporting investment in fish processing, tourism and maritime activities, stated the report.

The port will have 650m of fixed berths and three floating pontoons with a combined length of 90m. It will also include a 68-m boat slipway, a fisheries administration building and a fish market as well as two ice plants, boat and vessel repair workshops, it added.
