Modification work starts on key Bahrain highway

MANAMA, June 13, 2018

Bahraini authorities have started the implementation of Phase One of development works to improve traffic signals on Shaikh Jabir Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway.

Advanced networking solutions will be utilised to boost the capacity of Shaikh Jabir Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway to accommodate more vehicles, said a statement from the Ministry of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning.

Currently, 130,000 vehicles use the Shaikh Jabir Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway each day, reaching 10,000 vehicles per hour during peak times, it added.

Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Khayyat, the works affair undersecretary at the ministry, said that developing the optical signal system on Shaikh Jabir Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway was part of the second package of urgent improvement projects intended to reduce traffic congestion in vital areas.

The project includes modifications to traffic signals at the Nabih Saleh and Sitra Shopping Mall intersections, he noted.

Al Khayyat said the traffic signals at the Nabih Saleh intersection will be modified from five to three stages.

"The intersection will be closed to incoming traffic from Manama up to Sitra walkway, and the exit lane will be closed to traffic coming towards Sitra. The works are anticipated to increase the capacity of the intersection by 20 per cent and to reduce waiting times at the Nabih Saleh intersection by 45 per cent," he explained.

The traffic signals at the Sitra Shopping Mall intersection will also be modified from five to three stages. Outbound traffic from Sitra Mall towards Manama will be merged with outbound traffic from Salman Ahmed Al Fateh Highway (Industrial Area), increasing capacity by 10 per cent and reducing waiting times by 37 per cent, he added.

Meanwhile, in another development, the ministry has announced the closure of one lane on Avenue 46/45 Junction in order to implement some sewerage works in Arad Area.

An alternative lane is however, being provided for traffic movement on that route. The closure will be effective for 3 months starting June 11, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
