Averda building solid waste landfill in Congo

BRAZZAVILLE, Congo, August 11, 2016

Averda, the global waste management solutions provider, is building Congo's first public and fully environmentally compliant municipal solid waste landfill in Lifoula village, Brazzaville.

The Lifoula landfill, designed, built and operated by Averda, will stretch across 40 hectares of land, it will have eight storage cells and an operational lifespan of 15 years.

Strictly designed as a municipal solid waste landfill, Lifoula will open its first cell in January 2017, the remaining seven cells being rendered operational in a phased approach, with the last cell scheduled to be commissioned in October 2030.
Averda’s newest initiative in Congo will boost Brazzaville’s economy, as the total number of Congolese employed by Averda in its first year of operations in the country will reach almost 1,500.

The new landfill, a first of its kind not just for Congo but for the Central African countries, will be equipped with a leachate collection and treatment system, a system for the capture and reuse of biogas released by the waste landfilled, and with a system for the collection and treatment of the surface water.

The estimated biogas generation capacity of the plant was calculated by Averda’s technical experts to reach 2,000 - 2500 m3/h after the first four years of landfilling operations.

Mohamad Ghalayini, Averda Congo managing director, said: “We are pleased to see the commitment and dedication of Brazzaville authorities to make the capital city of Congo a cleaner and safer place to work and live in. The new landfill will not only provide an infusion of much-needed capital investment and job creation in Brazzaville, but it will also capitalise on the by-products of waste generation, where the food waste will be turned into organic compost and supplied to the Congolese farmers while the biogas emanated by the landfill can provide electricity to the grid”.

Averda is the largest environmental solutions provider in the Middle East and Africa region, specialising in integrated resources management. Headquartered in Dubai for its GCC markets, and in London for its other international markets, Averda provides sustainable solutions and has more than 35 years of experience in the effective management of waste for both private and public sector clients across pedestrian, residential, commercial and industrial areas. - TradeArabia News Service
