FreeStyle Libre system 'effective in glucose monitoring'

DUBAI, November 14, 2019

People who use the FreeStyle Libre system were found to check their glucose levels 12 times per day, which is far greater than reported testing frequency using traditional glucose monitoring, according to real-world data issued from Abbott, which includes almost 500,000 users of the system.

The study also highlights reduced estimated HbA1c in FreeStyle Libre system users, from 8.2% to 6.7% as scan rate increased, and ongoing clinical benefits including reduced hypoglycemia and 44% increased time spent in range. Both real-world data and clinical research show Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre system is associated with better glucose control, decreased time in hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, and improved HbA1c.

Diabetes is a major public health issue in the Mena region. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 39.9 million adults aged 18 to 79 years in Mena are currently living with diabetes. With World Diabetes Day taking place on November 14, stress-free solutions for diabetes management that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle are in demand.

With over 1.5 million users worldwide, the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System developed by Abbott is reimagining glucose monitoring for people living with diabetes. This technology is not only changing the way users manage glucose levels, but it is also giving physicians and their patients living with diabetes insights into behavioral trends, providing a complete glycemic profile of users, Abbott said.

“World Diabetes Day is a critically important time of the year for Mena residents due to the high prevalence of diabetes in the region”, said Hani Khasati, regional director from Diabetes Care, Abbott. “While many environmental and social factors contribute to the prevalence of diabetes, governments are tackling this epidemic by providing the right education, treatment and technology that will enable patients to manage their condition and lead a normal, healthy life.”

Khasati added: “Our real-world data has also shown that the FreeStyle Libre system is truly life-changing. It is highly effective in liberating a broad range of patients from the hassles of traditional glucose monitoring, allowing patients to see improvements in their glucose measures, and is leading the way in ensuring people with diabetes are firmly back in charge of their health and their lives.” - TradeArabia News Service
