'SECTOR MAKES BIG STRIDES'

Abu Dhabi's aluminum trade hits $760m in 8 months

ABU DHABI, November 3, 2017

Abu Dhabi's trade in aluminum hit Dh2.8 billion ($760 million) in the first eight months of 2017, accounting for 2.6 percent of the emirate's non-oil economy, the total of which amounted to Dh107.4 billion by the end of August, according to Statistics Centre-Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi's aluminum exports totaled Dh2.3 billion, while imports stood at Dh460 million during the monitored period. The product accounted for 0.06 percent of the emirate's total imports. Aluminum re-exports reached around Dh9 million by the end of August, according to SCAD figures.

The remarkable growth in the aluminum industry translates the great strides taken across the country's non-oil sector over the past 10 years, Wam news agency said quoting industry analysts.

Aluminum industry experts, surveyed by state news agency Wam, attributed the significant growth in the aluminum platform to the growing demand on the commodity locally, regionally and globally, affirming that the UAE has become one of the key players in the industry on account of the mega plants and smelters operating in this sector nationwide.
