Over 50 runners for Liwa ‘all-sand’ race

ABU DHABI, February 4, 2016

More than 50 runners from various countries will participate in the upcoming edition of the Liwa Challenge in Abu Dhabi, UAE, one of the rare “100-per cent all-sand” races that is slowly becoming internationally recognized.

The racers will set off from the Tal Moreeb dune (also known as Moreeb Hill or Sacary Mountain) on February 8 in the morning to face the Liwa desert. A total of 10 checkpoints, spaced out by 20 km on average, will be placed throughout the course, where water will be distributed for racers who will be given medical care if needed.

Maximum time allocated to cover the 100 and 200 km distances will be 80 hours.

The Liwa desert has been selected for a stiff 100 or 200 km course, as the racers choose.

Liwa is an oasis located on the northern border mostly uninhabited desert of Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter), nearly 100 km in the South of the Arabian Gulf Coast. Centered in Muzayri city, it stretches over nearly 100 km from East to West, along a curved northwards bow.

Based at 22 km in the South of Muzayri via a small road (or 15 km as the crow flies), from the top of its 300 m height, its draws every year a large number of local and international visitors.

The Liwa Challenge 2016 is sponsored and coordinated by Smart Tents LLC.  Saeed Khouri, CEO has been working closely with Michel Casals, Liwa Challenge International Chairman and Event Coordinator Sami Bandak. – TradeArabia News Service
