Bahrain 'litter free' campaign launched

A fun-packed campaign ‘Love Bahrain Litter Free’ was organised at Al Ghous Corniche in Manama to help create awareness among citizens about the correct disposal of rubbish.

The event was organised by Gulf City Cleaning Company (GCCC) in co-operation with Muharraq Municipality and MICE Management.

Gulf City Cleaning Company, contracted to undertake the waste management for Muharraq and Manama, has joined with Sphinx Services Company to spread the clealiness message.

The key highights included a group walk around the Corniche, Environmental Awareness competition, and entertainment from the Al Mahabba Kids Band, a bouncy castle, free T shirts, popcorn and water for the children turning up.

‘Put your rubbish in the bin’ is the current key message for this national campaign which commenced in February 2009 and has seen a number of initiatives taking place to create awareness,' said a GCCC official.

“GCCC has invested heavily in new equipment, manpower and vehicles to provide a professional cleaning service for everyone to enjoy a clean environment,' said Adrian Cockrem, general manager of GCCC.

'However it is the responsibility of everyone to work towards a clean environment and we want to get the message across that it is not acceptable to drop litter on the streets and that all rubbish should be placed securely in a bin,” he added.
 
Mohamed Al Othman, head of Public Relations and Information said that these awareness programs were held under the guidance of Sheikh Khalifa bin Isa Al Khalifa, director general of Muharraq Municipality.
 
The initiative is aimed at educating people about the importance of hygiene and the preservation of the environment, as well as urging the public to co-operate with the municipality in order to create cleaner streets in our towns and villages.

'These activities, programs and events are the cornerstone of creating awareness among youth for a cleaner and more hygienic environment.”

He also commended the efforts of Gulf City Cleaning Company (GCCC) and recognized the efforts made by the company PRO Ali Ridha.

Mohamed Youssef Al-Rais, the municipal council member of Muharraq, lauded all the participants for their efforts. 'We are happy to see such awareness-raising initiatives, to aid the cleanliness and beauty of the Kingdom,' he said.-TradeArabia News Service
