Smart ID project carbon footprint drops 50pc

ABU DHABI, September 7, 2014

The Emirates Identity Authority has revealed that it has succeeded in reducing the smart identity card project’s carbon footprint by 50 per cent (Kgs/Co2e 4.29) by reengineering processes as part of its previous strategic plan 2010 – 2013.

The achievement was revealed in a study conducted by Masdar, an Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company, in the framework of the partnership between the two organisations.

The Emirates ID stressed that the drop in carbon footprint would reach 70 per cent by 2015.

The authority emphasised that it has put in place a plan to reduce carbon footprint by 15 – 20 per cent during the period 2014-2015. This would be achieved through constant improvement on its procedures with respect to the identity card and in line with the strategic plan 2014-2016.

The reengineering of processes has helped improve national ID issuance and population register operations, saving five million working hours for the authority and the customers, and well over Dh470 million ($127.95 million) of operational expenses during the past five years.

The Emirates ID has taken up a number of dynamic initiatives for environmental sustainability. The concept of ‘green building’ is one of the principal initiatives in this framework, aimed at turning all of the authority’s facilities into green buildings. The initiative is aimed at enabling the adoption of environment-friendly smart systems in all its machinery.  – TradeArabia News Service
