Singapore Air to auction seats for A380 flight

Singapore, July 25, 2007

Singapore Airlines, which will be the first to fly the new Airbus A380, said it will auction seats on eBay for the carrier's first flight of the superjumbo later this year.

"Bids will be invited for seats on this history-making flight, and winning bidders will know that every dollar they pay will go to worthwhile charities," Singapore Airlines said in a statement.

The first commercial flight on the double-decker airliner, which can seat 555 passengers, is due in October from Singapore to Sydney and back.

The proceeds will go to Medecins Sans Frontieres, Singapore's Community Chest and two children's hospitals in Sydney.

The city-state's national carrier, which is the world's biggest airline by market value, said that eBay Inc. would subsidise the fees and charges from the auction, and that online payment services provider PayPal would rebate a portion of its fees and charges to help support the charities.

Fuel supplier ExxonMobil Aviation would donate the fuel for the flights, Singapore Airlines said. The auction would be held a few week before the first flight, the airline said. - Reuters
