Egypt's tourism sector sees positive numbers

Arab tourists to Egypt up 23pc in May

CAIRO, July 8, 2015

Egypt’s relentless efforts to revive tourism in the region has reflected in the continued growth of travellers to the country, more so from Arab nations, which registered a 23.1 per cent increase in May compared to the same period last year.

Kuwaiti tourists topped the list, with a 74.4 per cent increase in traveller numbers compared to May 2014. Following close were Saudi Arabian tourists, jumping 58.2 per cent, and Emirati tourists, reporting a 43.5 per cent increase, compared to May last year.

Overall, visitors to Egypt increased by 16.5 per cent in May from the number of visitors in the same period in 2014.

This surge in tourist numbers is a result of recently launched campaigns aimed at attracting more tourists to Egypt, specifically from Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait.

Both the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA) are ramping up efforts prior to the launch of their forthcoming global advertising and publicity campaign which will focus on cultural tourism in the country. This new campaign aims to promote the importance of Egypt's cultural destinations among family and youth demographics.

By creating tourist packages that combine visits to cultural destinations with opportunities to stay at beach resorts, the campaign hopes to highlight all that Egypt has to offer.

Furthermore, Egypt witnessed a significant increase in tourist numbers during the first five months of the year, with Saudi Arabian tourists going up 67.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2014. Likewise, Emirati visitors jumped 48.3 per cent and Kuwaiti tourists increased by 48.6 per cent from the start of the year till May.

Sami Mahmoud, ETA Chairman, said: "These positive results reflect that Egypt has fans from all over the world, particularly from our Arab neighbours. The steady increase in Arab tourists demonstrates their trust and belief in Egypt's ability to provide its visitors with opportunities to enjoy the most beautiful touristic destinations." – TradeArabia News Service
