Metso seals Grupo Mexico copper plant contract

Metso has announced that it has won a major contract to deliver its cone crushers to Grupo Mexico’s La Caridad copper concentrator plant.

Headquartered in Espoo, Finland, Metso is a frontrunner in sustainable technologies, end-to-end solutions and services for the aggregates, minerals processing and metals refining industries globally.

As per the deal, Metso will soon start the installation of its Nordberg MP800 cone crushers at La Caridad copper mine’s concentrator plant in Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico.

Grupo Mexico is the largest copper producer in the South American nation. Metso has a long-term strategic partnership with the company and has delivered a significant amount of equipment to their different mining sites during recent years.

"We are honored that Grupo Mexico has chosen Metso for this important order. Our products are designed to meet the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability, aligning perfectly with Grupo Mexico's ambitious targets," said Giuseppe Campanelli, President, North and Central America Market Area, Metso.

The value of the order, which was booked in the Minerals segment’s 2025 third-quarter order intake, was over €20 million.

Meanwhile, the Finnish group has booked the third part of the orders for JSC Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex’s (Almalyk MMC) copper smelter project based on the equipment and project services delivery contracts announced in August last year.

Almalyk MMC is the main copper producer in Uzbekistan. The company produces refined copper, gold, silver, zinc, molybdenum, lead concentrate, and other products.

The first parts of the orders (€146 million) were booked in the fourth quarter of 2024, and the second part (€50 million) in the first quarter of 2025.

The order value recorded in the Minerals segment’s orders in the fourth quarter of 2025 is €70 million.

Metso’s scope of delivery to Almalyk MMC’s new copper smelter complex includes flash smelting and flash converting, gas cleaning, and sulfuric acid production technologies.

The planned production capacity of the new copper smelter, which will be integrated with the company’s existing operations in Almalyk, is 300,000 tpa of copper cathodes and 1.8 million tpa of sulfuric acid.
