Renewable energy sources accounted for 54.1 per cent of electricity generated in the European Union (EU) in the second quarter of 2026, slightly down from 54.3 per cent in the same period of 2025, according to Eurostat.

Solar remained the largest source of renewable electricity, contributing 41.6 per cent of the total, up from 37.0 per cent a year earlier.

Wind ranked second at 27.7 per cent, followed by hydropower at 22.6 per cent. Combustible renewable fuels accounted for 7.7 per cent, while geothermal and other sources contributed 0.4 per cent.

Latvia recorded the EU’s highest renewable electricity share at 97.7 per cent, driven mainly by hydropower and solar.

Denmark followed at 94.3 per cent, largely from wind, while Croatia reached 92.2 per cent, primarily through hydropower.

The lowest shares were reported in Slovakia at 19.8 per cent, Czechia at 20.9 per cent, and Malta at 24.5 per cent, highlighting significant differences in renewable electricity generation across EU member states. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
