Work starts on new underpass at King Abdulaziz Intersection in Riyadh

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has started work on a new underpass at the intersection of King Abdulaziz Road and Anas bin Malik Road to improve traffic flow and connectivity between neighboring districts along one of the capital’s main corridors.

The King Abdulaziz Road project is part of the Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program, reported SPA.

This section extends 4.7km and includes four bridges and the new underpass. Upon completion, it will raise capacity to more than 450,000 vehicles per day, enhance service levels, and reduce travel times.

A traffic diversion took effect at the intersection yesterday (November 6) with the main carriageway of King Abdulaziz Road fully closed and vehicles redirected to service roads with three lanes in each direction.

Alternative routes and directional signs have been provided to maintain flow and ensure road users’ safety under a comprehensive traffic management plan coordinated with the relevant authorities.

The program covers the construction and upgrade of more than 500km of roads across Riyadh, including new roads, improvements to existing main corridors, and better links between them, said the SPA report.

It aims to strengthen the city’s transport network and support its development as a major hub for sustainable transport and logistics services in the Middle East, it added.
