DHCC to offer free breast cancer tests

Dubai, October 13, 2010

Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) will partner with the German Clinic, based in DHCC, to offer a series of free breast cancer consultations and examinations during October – the breast cancer awareness month.

The series of events will provide practical advice, health checks and discussion on breast cancer diagnosis to ensure women understand the facts and methods for early detection, treatment and support.

Advice will also be given about male breast cancer, a genuine condition that is often overlooked. Just like with women, early detection is crucial in treating male breast cancer but the lower levels of awareness and the associated self-consciousness can result in fewer men recognising the warning signs and seeking professional support.

Events will include a seminar and consultations for the public at Dubai Healthcare City on October 16 and free health check-ups for staff and businesses based in the Tecom Investments free zones.

“National Breast Cancer Awareness month provides an opportunity for the community, as well as the public and private sectors to come together and help in early detection and treatment,” said Dr Ayesha Abdullah, executive director of DHCC.

“One of the most feared diseases among women, breast cancer is so common that most people know someone or the other who has had the disease.”

“Early detection is the best method for successfully treating breast cancer and regular self and clinical examinations are the best way to achieve this. Dubai Healthcare City has a number of healthcare providers who can offer advice, conduct examinations and help with the treatment of breast cancer,” she added.

Dr Andeas Kopp, German Board accredited gynecologic oncologist at German Clinic, said: “Breast cancer is the most common among women in developed countries. For women at average risk of breast cancer, the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer is 13 per cent. The incidence of breast cancer increases with age and risks associated with diet and obesity are also linked to increasing rates of the disease.

“The German Clinic is committed to engaging the community in order to raise breast cancer awareness and encourage people to be proactive in recognising the possible signs and reducing the risks.”

“Our facility provides a number of therapies including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapy. Innovative cancer care concepts at the center also include integrative oncology,” he explained. – TradeArabia News Service
