Forum to probe GCC security challenges

Manama, June 11, 2012

Global experts are to debate the security of the highly-strategic Gulf region at a key conference in Bahrain tomorrow (June 12).

It will be held at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa under the slogan "Arabian Gulf Security: Regional Facts and International Interests".

Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, GCC Secretary-General Dr Abdullatif Zayani and Vice-Admiral John W Miller, Commander of US Naval Forces Central Command and US Fifth Fleet, will address the opening session.

Minister of State for Information Affairs Samira Rajab and Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI) international security studies director Dr Jonathan Eyal will also speak at the key event.

Bahrain Centre for Strategic and International Studies and Energy (DERASAT) is organising the event in co-operation with RUSI.

His Majesty's Adviser for diplomatic affairs and DERASAT board of trustees' chairman Dr Mohammed Abdul Ghaffar said that the conference would discuss three important issues pertaining to current events and their repercussions in the region.

They are security arrangements between the US, the UK and the GCC countries, Iran's nuclear programme and political unrest in the region.

Issues of newly-emerging political Islam movements in the aftermath of the so-called Arab Spring will also figure in the discussions. – TradeArabia News Service
