580 violations by Abu Dhabi motorist!

Abu Dhabi, September 23, 2013

Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate have arrested a four-wheel driver and impounded his vehicle for using fake number plates in an attempt to cheat radars.

According to the traffic officials, the driver had accumulated Dh459,000 ($124,915) in fines for 580 traffic violations.

Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Bloushi, the head of Peripheral Regions Traffic Department at Abu Dhabi Police said after processing surveillance footage from the Roads Surveillance Branch (Radars) at ADP Traffic and Patrols Department, officers noticed a discrepancy between the vehicle’s plate numbers and its registered specifications.

"Moreover, the driver was wanted for committing several speed limit violations in the Western Region. The footage was transferred to the traffic investigation officers to take the necessary action," he added.

Al Bloushi warned motorists against tampering with vehicles’ number plates data, or making new ones. Under UAE traffic laws, tampering with a car plate is punishable with imprisonment for up to two years, and/or a fine of Dh20,000.

The ADP Traffic and Patrols Directorate, he said, has started sending out air patrols in co-operation with the Air Wing Section to be on the lookout for vehicles travelling with fake or obscured plates in order to curb such violations.-TradeArabia News Service
