Bahrain to boost cement production

Manama, June 1, 2011

More than 30,000 tonnes of cement will be available soon in Bahrain every week, which will be enough to meet domestic demand, said the Kingdom's Industry and Commerce Ministry.

This would consist of domestic production as well as that imported into the country, the ministry added.

The ministry will follow up all matters related to the cement sector and was keen to keep prices at the current level, it added.

The move was announced following a visit by Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro to two of Bahrain's cement producers - Star Cement, Hidd, and Falcon in the Hufair Industrial Area.

He took stock of the situation and looked at the factories' potential to provide cement to the local market in light of increasing demand.

Star Cement general manager Peugeot Jatargi, who briefed the minister, confirmed that the factory can currently produce 1,200 tonnes per day.

Falcon chief executive officer Hesham Al Rayes said they were able to produce 1,000 tonnes per day but were planning to increase production to 4,000 tonnes per day at the beginning of next year.-TradeArabia News Service
