Dubai RTA eyes tram line extension

DUBAI, August 4, 2016

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is planning expansion of the tram service in the city to cover tourist destinations such as Burj Al Arab, Madinat Jumeirah and Mall of the Emirates, a report said.

The RTA is seeking consultants to undertake the feasibility study for launching new phases of Dubai Tram, the Emirates 24|7 report said quoting sources.

The expansion will take place in two phases, it said. Phase Two will cover tourist destinations such as Burj Al Arab, Madinat Jumeirah and Mall of the Emirates and Phase Three will extend along Jumeirah Beach Road to 2nd December Street.

“Dubai Tram is also set to grow with Phase Two of the project. The success of the current tram has encouraged us to look into extending the line up to 5 km covering more iconic destinations,” Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim Younes, CEO of RTA's Rail Agency, had told Emirates 24|7 earlier.

Dubai Tram now has 11 stations, serving over a distance of almost 11 km.

Meanwhile, the RTA is also looking at extending the Green Line of Dubai Metro from the existing Al Jaddaf station to Academic City, adding a rail line of 20.6 km and 11 stations, the report said.
