SQHC to take up major development projects

Damascus, May 18, 2009

Syrian-Qatari Holding Company (SQHC), Syria’s largest holding company, has signed up to undertake several investment and development projects in different industry sectors at major investment forum.

The inaugural two-day Gulf Investment Forum kicked off at the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus yesterday (May 17).

SQHC chairman Nasser Hassan Al-Ansari signed a number of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for several world-class projects.

“The Syrian and Qatari governments came together in a strategic agreement to establish the Syrian-Qatari Holding Company,” said Al-Ansari. “We are honored by the responsibility the two nations had entrusted to us, and we are eager to exceed expectations by adding value to the welfare of the Syrian people through our projects.”

“The forum is a perfect platform and an excellent opportunity to roll out our activities,” said Hassan Mukayed, CEO of SQHC.

“The partnerships we announced through the signatures of the MoUs enabled us to showcase our upcoming projects and to demonstrate our commitment to supporting the local economy,” he added.

One of the investment MoUs signed by SQHC includes the construction and operation of several power stations across Syria. With its world-class strategic partners, SQHC will manage the construction and operation of the power stations and supply the generated power to the Syrian National Grid.

SQHC will also invest in two irrigated farms that will utilise modern irrigation technologies and agricultural methods to help better manage the country’s water resources. The two farms will grow various types of crops which will be used to feed cattle at the dairy farm that Syrian-Qatari Holding Company is also investing in.

SQHC will establish a company to construct and operate a production plant to produce phosphate-based fertilizers capitalising on Syria’s significant reserves of high quality phosphate rock. The initial plans for the plant call for production capacities well in excess of 500,000 tons per year of phosphate fertilizers.

Also, SQHC’s Medical City project will provide outstanding standard of medical treatment and care that will bring significant benefit to the local population, and will encourage patients from across the Middle East to come to Syria for treatment. The initial plans for the complex call for the construction of three buildings which will include a 130-bed hospital, specialist medical clinics, diagnostic services, a nursing school and accommodation facilities for medical staff and visitors.

The hospital will be fully operational with state of the art equipment and technology, and will be staffed by well trained medical practitioners and nurses who will meet the highest standards of excellence.

SQHC will boost the capacity and productivity of an existing dairy farm in the region of Aleppo by investing significantly in new state-of-the-art equipment and technology. New modern dairy and farming techniques will be implemented to increase the quantity and quality of the production.

“These projects are fully in-line with our focus on the development of infrastructure projects that can contribute to Syria’s economic development and the well-being of its citizens,” Mukayed concluded. – TradeArabia News Service
