King Faisal varsity students on BWTC study tour

Manama, October 25, 2009

Professors and students from the College of Architecture and Planning, King Faisal University of Saudi Arabia, visited the Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC), to understand the elements of innovative and sustainable architectural design incorporated in this structure.

The visit was requested by the college, as part of the curriculum, to produce a case study on the the region’s most pioneering and innovative development.

The delegation, hosted by BWTC’s architects and engineers Atkins, was given a tour of the building and the students learnt how BWTC, the iconic building is the first in the world to incorporate electricity-generating wind turbines between two commercial tower structures, surpassing existing construction boundaries. The three 29-metre diameter turbines provide 11-15 per cent of the towers’ energy requirements and are now set to auto-mode, supplying power to the 50 storey twin office towers.

This pioneering project has become the subject matter for the case study as it has helped shape the future for environmental architecture. Today, wind turbines are being considered by private developers as renewable sources for wind energy development in the Middle East.-TradeArabia News Service
