Michael Proffitt, CEO of Dubai Logistics City (DLC), has received the Asia Pacific Supply Chain Executive Award in recognition of his contribution to the development of the logistics and supply chain community.

The DLC chief accepted the award at an event held alongside Asia’s most established and leading logistics and supply chain exhibition, SCM Logistics World 2007 in Singapore.

The third edition of the SCM Logistics Excellence Awards’ was the largest supply chain excellence awards in Asia Pacific that focussed on organisations and individuals’ achievements in transfoming their supply chains for greater corporate success.

Commenting on the award, Proffitt said: “The award is testament to DLC’s unique multi-modal hub concept and its growing significance in the global logistics industry.

“DLC is the foremost concept in logistics city planning both in the Middle East and abroad as a brand new city practically taking shape centred around what will one day be the largest airport in the world.

“The aviation and logistics industry is one of the most vibrant industries in the world, witnessing astonishing growth in terms of air shipping in recent years. DLC will allow this medium to grow even further in the region due to its proximity to sea-air and road transport.”

A core component of Dubai World Central (DWC), set to become the world’s largest aviation and logistics community, the project is setting benchmarks in the area of multi-modal logistics developments as was presented in a case study at the conference.

DLC’s case study on ‘Evaluating new hubs and alternative destinations for global and regional shipments’ expanded on specific points such as evaluating existing shipment hubs and terminals in Asia, key factors to consider in logistics network planning and exploring DLC as a regional and global shipments hub.

DWC, covering a total of 140 square kilometres, will support Dubai’s, as well as the region’s commercial, tourism and logistics requirements until 2050, said Abdulla Al Falasi, marketing and corporate communications director of Dubai World Central.

“This project signifies one of the most important developments for the United Arab Emirates, and will represent a benchmark on both the regional and global stages as a testament to Dubai’s dedication to the logistics and aviation industry,” continued Al Falasi.

“DWC will eventually be home to some 900,000 people and provide business, residential and leisure districts. Additionally, the project will cater to regional logistics operators through Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB), DLC, DWC Aviation City and the existing Jebel Ali Port. SCM Logistics World Singapore allowed specialists to study the unique development that is under way in Dubai as an investment opportunity.”

Spanning 25 square kilometres, Dubai Logistics City is designed to ultimately handle 12 million tonnes of air cargo annually in up to 16 air cargo terminals.-TradeArabia News Service
