BBC launches Arabic TV service

Dubai, March 10, 2008

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has launched its Arabic-language cable and satellite television channel, marking its second attempt to enter the market.

It comes 11 years after its original foray into the region which ended in failure due to editorial disagreements.

The $37.7 million venture will build on its established Arabic radio and internet services, and will become the region's only 'tri-media' network, said a report.

BBC Arabic Television will be the corporation's first publicly funded international television service.

The network is expected to compete with the region's leading news channels - Qatar-based Al Jazeera and Saudi-owned Al Arabiya.

Hosam El Sokkari, head of the Arabic service, said the service will "reflect the breadth of the Arab audience's interests."

BBC Arabic Television will be free-to-air for anyone with a satellite or cable connection in North Africa, the Middle East and the Gulf.
