Coca-Cola on novel water distribution drive

Manama, July 22, 2008

The Coca-Cola Company said it has helped kick off a two-month water distribution campaign in Manama, handing out chilled drinking water and beverages to people toiling in the summer heat.

The brainchild of a group of young and energetic volunteers, the initiative has received the whole-hearted support of Cola-Cola, which has contributed 3,000 bottles and cans, as well as Coca-Cola caps to shield workers from the scorching sun.

Commenting on the campaign, a volunteer said the drive underlined the importance of water in the human lives.

"Almost 80 per cent of our bodies consist of water. Our livelihood depends on it, and although water has been ranked by experts as second only to oxygen as essential for life, sadly not everyone has easy access to water," he noted.

“Most of us take water for granted, so we hope this water project will motivate others to be more aware of how vital this resource is. We thank the government for enforcing the new law that prohibits working in the heat during peak hours. We also thank Coca-Cola for its generous support,” said another volunteer.

Leila Rajkumar, public relations manager for the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant, said: “We are immensely proud to participate in this campaign. Coca-Cola has always been committed to supporting the communities in which we operate, and we are happy to back initiatives such as this one, which is a brilliant idea on the part of these young community members."

"They are an asset to Bahrain and we congratulate them for their ingenuity and compassion," she added.-TradeArabia News Service
