Bahrain group launches anti-terror campaign

Manama, September 2, 2010

A nationwide campaign on the dangers of terrorism and threat against people's unity has been launched in Bahrain by a human rights group.

The 'No to Terrorism' campaign will be carried out in line with anti-terrorism initiatives by the UN, said Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS) secretary-general Faisal Fulad.

It aims to shed light on the harm acts of sabotage cause and ways to combat such activities, he added.

"The UN has documented terrorism in all its forms and types, stating ways to combat it under its various campaigns," he said. "We are taking these guidelines and directions as our guide for our campaign."

The campaign will also seek to spearhead a national awareness programme to prevent children being manipulated to take part in acts of sabotage.

"Children are used in these acts due to their inability to know right from wrong," said Fulad. "They are even offered money if they are found to be in need, just to get them involved. The campaign is working on initiating a programme that educates these children and prevents them from being used."

BHRWS campaign co-ordinator Nasser Salman said the campaign would focus on three angles - raising awareness, documenting information and helping terrorism victims.

"We will raise awareness by holding conferences and workshops to tackle the issue," he said. "We will also hold religious and national events to raise awareness on precautionary measures."

The government and private sectors will be asked to get involved with proposals on their roles, said Salman. – TradeArabia News Service
