Sotheby's to display Islamic Arts at Doha expo

Doha, September 8, 2010

Sotheby’s will showcase more than 30 works of Islamic Art dating from the first century of Islam to the 19th century at an upcoming exhibition in Qatar. This is the fourth educational event held by Sotheby’s in Qatar this year.

The expo, to be held from September 20 to 21 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, supports and celebrates Doha as 'The Arab Capital of Culture 2010' and will have on display Islamic artistic endeavour throughout the ages.

The works are selected highlights of Sotheby’s ‘Princely Collection’ and ‘Arts of the Islamic World’ sales which are to take place in London on October 5 and 6, said a senior Sotheby's official.

Covering the full historical and geographical range of the Islamic World, the pieces date from the first century of Islam to the 19th century and include ceramics, weaponry, textiles, jewellery and Islamic manuscripts and paintings from Europe, India, Turkey, Iran, The Middle East and North Africa.

Commenting on the expo, Edward Gibbs, Sotheby’s senior director and head of the Middle East department, said: "Qatar and the entire Gulf is an increasingly important market for Sotheby’s and we’re delighted to bring these objects of historical and artistic significance to the Gulf region."

"Doha has been growing in importance as a cultural centre since the opening of the Museum of Islamic Art and Sotheby’s is eager to contribute by sharing this significant collection with enthusiasts, the curious, students and, of course, potential buyers who want to add to or start collections of their own," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
