25 people died in Bahrain unrest says minister

Manama, May 4, 2011

A total of 25 people died during Bahrain's unrest, including 16 protesters during demonstrations or in detention besides four policemen and five expatriates, a top official revealed.

Four more people were allegedly killed during the protests, but two of them died due to heart attacks and the other two as a result of road accidents, said Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowment Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa at a Press conference held in the Information Affairs Authority, Isa Town on Tuesday.

It was held to reveal the initial findings of ongoing investigations into the violations of doctors and medical staff at Salmaniya Medical Complex during the unrest.

Shaikh Khalid denied that investigations were being carried out as revenge against protesters. 'There is no revenge or targeting, what happened is very painful and investigations are going on,' he said.

The minister also denied reports that places of worship had been targeted and claims that Qurans had been burned. 'Any Muslim place is not allowed to be targeted,' said Shaikh Khalid.

'No one tried to burn the Quran in this country, we are a Muslim country,' he stated.

Responding to a question about the allegation of mistreatment of prisoners, Shaikh Khalid said Bahrain did not tolerate any breach of human rights.

Two committees had been established to investigate how force had been used, he said.

The Interior Ministry had already revealed 1,200 allegations of human rights breaches and violations would not be tolerated, he added.

'If any official committed a breach against human rights it is not tolerated,' said Shaikh Khalid.-TradeArabia News Service
