Qatar's population up 9pc to 2.3m

Qatar’s population rose nine per cent to about 2.34 million as in June this year, compared to 2.15 million last year, according to a report.
 
The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, pointed out that the on a month-on-month basis the population in June witnessed a marginal decline of 1.28 per cent when compared to the previous month’s figures, said the Peninsula report.
 
The drop is due to summer vacations when a number of Qataris and expatriates travel outside the country, it said.
 
The numbers, according to the ministry’s 18th edition, did not include Qataris and non-Qataris (with residency permits) who were outside the country’s boundaries on the given date.
 
Meanwhile, the visitors to Qatar increased by 7.3 per cent in June versus the same of period last year, said the report.
 
The visitors from GCC countries made up the highest proportion totaling to about 40.7 per cent, of total visitors, it said.
