Qatar Airways may buy more Airbus A380s

Dubai, May 7, 2008

Qatar Airways said it may order more of Airbus's A380s, the world's largest passenger plane, as part of a possible expansion programme, adding to the five it has already requested.

"We are thinking of ordering additional A380s," Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al-Baker told reporters at the Arab Travel Market exhibition in Dubai on Wednesday.

He declined to say whether he was in talks with Toulouse, France-based Airbus about the possible additional purchases.

Meanwhile, a Gulf News online report quoted him as saying the airline's future fleet expansion strategy would result in the current fleet of 62 aircraft expanding to 262 in a few years.

The expansion is expected to cost the airline $30 billion, he said.

Currently, the airline has 80 Airbus A350s and 60 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on its order book.

The airline is expected to start services to three new destinations, including Gangzhou (China), Houston (US) and Kozhikode (India) in the near future.
