Volvo’s popular battery-electric medium duty truck – the Volvo FL Electric – is now coming in a 14-tonne entry level version with new battery configuration, making it an ideal transport tool for the city.

The Volvo FL medium-duty truck was one of Volvo’s first models to be offered with an all-electric driveline and this model has since then been embraced by many transport companies. 

Its compact dimensions are ideal for navigating tight city streets for door-to-door deliveries, with the electric driveline keeping noise levels to a minimum and tailpipe emissions to zero.

On the Volvo FL Electric, the Swedish truck maker said the new 14-tonne version of the FL Electric model is tailor made for city transports. The production of these new trucks will begin in the second half of 2026.

While Volvo is expanding its electric truck offer to cover more transport segments, this new Volvo FL Electric variant with a 14-tonne gross combination weight is a new entry offer in terms of payload and installed battery capacity.

The 14-tonne Volvo FL Electric offers an electric range of up to 200km depending on load, driving style, ambient temperature. It other key features are:

*Useable battery energy 145 kWh

*Electric motor delivering 180 kW

*Ground clearance is 240 mm for the 14-tonne truck

*Wheelbases span from 3800 mm to 6500 mm

*DC charging 20-80% takes approximately 1h 25 mins with eight battery units

"This is a perfect inner-city workhorse with no tailpipe emissions," remarked Jan Hjelmgren, the Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks. 

"We are always there to help our customers find the best electric truck for their business. You should only buy as much battery capacity as you need for the task to maximize the productivity in terms of payload capacity and profitability," he stated.

The electric versions of Volvo’s FL and FE electric truck models have been in the market since 2019 and are sold in multiple markets across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

The new version of Volvo FL Electric comes in several wheelbases, axle configurations, and battery configurations so that each customer can tailor their truck to specific needs.

The shape and installation of the batteries ensure that they do not interfere with any bodybuilding installations on the frame. Further, the new Volvo FL Electric variant is also more agile thanks to the possibility of a vehicle width of down to 2.4 meters.

The new batteries are available in several of Volvo’s electric truck models – all the way from the new 14-tonne FL Electric and the 16- and 18-tonne FL Electric and up to Volvo FE Electric versions with a GCW of up to 26 tonnes.

Volvo has eight battery-electric truck models in production, and the company has sold more than 5,700 electric trucks globally, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
