Mozambique, TotalEnergies set to restart work on $20bn project

Mozambique and TotalEnergies are set to relaunch development of the French energy group’s $20 billion liquefied natural gas project on Thursday, nearly five years after work was suspended following a deadly Islamist militant attack, news agencies reported.

Construction of the LNG project in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province was halted in 2021 after escalating security concerns. TotalEnergies said late last year that it was ready to resume work after taking on additional equity alongside its partners, following the withdrawal of some financiers.

Mozambique President Daniel Chapo and TotalEnergies Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne were expected to attend a ceremony marking the project’s relaunch, according to a government statement.

In a statement, Chapo’s office said the resumption of the project represents “a significant milestone for the national economy” and reflects renewed confidence among international partners in Mozambique’s energy sector and broader institutional and human capacity.
