Flydubai flight incident an attempted terrorist act by co-pilot, says UAE

The investigations into the incident aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 have revealed that the co-pilot had attempted to carry out a terrorist act, reported UAE state new agency Wam, citing Counsellor Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, Attorney-General of the UAE.

The co-pilot began executing his plan during the flight, attacking the Indian pilot, Captain Machchhar Smit, inside the flight deck using a crash axe (typically kept in the cockpit for use during emergencies such as crashes) and attempting to take control of the aircraft, stated Al Shamsi.

The UAE Attorney-General said that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, motives, and any links related to the incident, as well as to complete technical examinations and analysis of physical and digital evidence.

In a statement, the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) commended the remarkable courage and speed of response of the Indian pilot, Captain Machchhar Smit, and the crew of flydubai flight FZ1073, along with the passengers who contributed to bringing the situation under control.

The Authority said that their decisive and swift intervention, and the sense of responsibility behind it, helped contain the situation and prevented more serious consequences, reflecting a level of readiness, cooperation and shared responsibility in facing exceptional emergencies, reported Wam citing senior official.

The GCAA confirmed that Captain Machchhar Smit has returned safely to the UAE, is in good condition, and is receiving the necessary medical treatment.

On the ongoing probe, the Authority said it will not comment on any details or claims in circulation that could pre-empt the findings of the investigation or affect its course. It urged the public to rely on official sources and to refrain from circulating speculation and unverified information.

The findings of the investigation and any related developments will be announced through official channels once the necessary procedures have been completed, it added.
