ArabCo-Suez JV wins Egypt wastewater plant deal

CAIRO, June 7, 2018

Arab Contractors Company (ArabCo) said its joint venture with Suez, a French-based utility company which operates largely in the water treatment and waste management sectors, has won a €50-million ($58.3 million) deal from the Egypt government for the revamping of a wastewater treatment plant in Alexandria, Egypt.

The contract was awarded by the Ministry of Housing, and the project is likely to be completed by the end of 2020, said a statement from the company.

As per the deal, the Arab Contractors Company-Suez JV will help boost the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant at Alexandria. The scope of work includes construction of four tanks with a diameter of 36m and a height of 23m for sludge collection besides a distribution tower, a boiler building, gas tanks, gas treatment units, a tank for bio gas sludge and receiving tank, it added.

Arab Contractors Company said the work is likely to be competed in two phases. In Phase One, the focus will be to improve the performance and increase the efficiency of the plant, and treatment of the sludge generated by the plant using the biogas, while the Phase Two will be aimed at reducing the environmental impact of these sewage purification products.

This will have a positive effect in maximising the utilisation of the emerging sludge besides improving the environmental status as (pollution reduction and decrease the odours resulting from the station by reducing the proportion of 30 per cent of the volume of sludge – the use of the drying sludge in different matters - generating electrical power up to 50 per cent of the power plant consumption), stated the Egyptian contractor.

A giant facility located in Alexandria, the Eastern Purification Treatment Plant caters to most of the eastern regions with a capacity of 800,000 cu m per day, said Hassan Al Far, the head of the Executive Authority for Drinking Water and Wastewater of Greater Cairo and Alexandria, after signing the deal with Mohsen Salah, the chairman of the Arab Contractors Company and Engineer Sherif Noaman, the regional manager of Suez International.

The main objective is to burn the products of purification of sewage water for the extraction of gases used in generating electricity a clean energy and achieving self-sufficiency of energy.-TradeArabia News Service
