WNA calls for protection of nuclear facilities after UAE incident

The World Nuclear Association (WNA) has condemned a drone attack near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE, calling for stronger protection of civilian energy infrastructure under international law.

The incident occurred on the morning of May 17, when a drone strike affected an electrical power system located outside the plant’s inner perimeter.

Authorities confirmed that there was no direct damage to the nuclear facility, all personnel remained safe, and emergency procedures were activated.

The plant continues to operate safely.

The association said it supports the response efforts of staff at Barakah and acknowledged the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in monitoring the situation and confirming safety conditions at the site.

In its statement, the organisation urged all parties conducting military activity near nuclear and civilian energy infrastructure to adhere to international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and warned that such attacks are “reckless and unacceptable.”

It stressed the importance of safeguarding nuclear facilities from any form of external threat, noting that energy infrastructure must remain protected due to its critical role in public safety and national stability.

The association said it will continue to monitor developments closely and coordinate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Association of Nuclear Operators to encourage restraint and reinforce nuclear safety standards.

It also reiterated its readiness to support international efforts aimed at ensuring the protection of nuclear energy infrastructure during periods of heightened geopolitical tension-OGN/ TradeArabia News Service
