Mövenpick to open 150-key lakeside resort in Erbil by 2030

Accor and KRD Holding have signed an agreement to develop Mövenpick Erbil Gomaspan Resort, a 150-key lakeside property in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region scheduled to open in 2030.

Located on the banks of Gomaspan Lake in Erbil Governorate, less than 30 minutes from Erbil city centre, the resort will be Mövenpick’s first property in the Kurdistan Region and its second in Iraq.

It will feature rooms and suites, restaurants and lounges, a spa, family leisure club, and indoor and outdoor pools.

The resort will target leisure travellers as well as weddings, celebrations and business events, with more than 1,300 square metres of meeting and event space.

Its location and facilities are intended to create a destination for family getaways, longer stays and major regional gatherings.

“With Erbil’s improving connectivity and strong domestic market, establishing a presence here is a strategic step in our regional growth. Partnering with KRD Holding, we will bring a distinctly different resort experience to the Kurdistan Region. Mövenpick Erbil Gomaspan Resort will leverage its spectacular natural setting and accessibility to become a leading leisure, wedding, and events destination. Following the successful launch of Mövenpick Hotel Al Zaytoon Baghdad, this is a compelling addition to our growing portfolio that reflects our commitment to expanding internationally recognized hospitality experiences across the country,” said Raki Phillips, Regional President for the Premium, Midscale and Economy division across the Middle East, Africa & Türkiye, at Accor.

Daban Hamid, Deputy CEO, KRD Holding, commented: "Partnering with a world-leading hospitality group reflects our vision to drive transformative development across Kurdistan. The Mövenpick Erbil Gomaspan Resort is a proud addition to our growing portfolio of international brands and demonstrates our commitment to attracting world-class investment, strengthening the region’s tourism offering, and contributing to its continued economic growth and modernisation."

Accor currently operates one hotel in Iraq, with more than 260 keys, while five additional properties comprising about 1,300 keys are under development.

The new resort will complement Mövenpick Hotel Al Zaytoon Baghdad and expand the brand’s presence across the region. -TradeArabia News Service
