Gulf Air... tightening data security

Bahrain’s national carrier Gulf Air has selected European software company Wallix’s privileged user management solution, Wallix AdminBastion, to meet its need for improved data security.

The Wallix AdminBastion also enables the company to improve its internal IT access arrangements, minimising the risk of data leaks and enabling it to have complete oversight over IT services with no system disturbance.

After implementing a proof of concept, Gulf Air chose Wallix AdminBastion for its ability to provide real-time monitoring capabilities, immediate access to video recordings of these sessions and comprehensive auditing to meet compliance requirements.

Dr Jassim Haji, director of IT, Gulf Air, said: “Wallix helped in providing real time resource management, reporting and monitoring capabilities for IT administrators, improving the overall efficiency of Gulf Air’s IT function. Privileged access management is instrumental for Gulf Air in complying with the required international and industry standards. We’re currently certified against the ISO 27001 standard and maintain compliance with PCI-DSS.”

Chris Pace, head of product marketing at Wallix, said: "Ineffective access management is increasingly recognised as a security weakness that organisations must address. The majority of data breaches come about as result of internal access flaws, which hackers or rogue insiders can exploit. Minimising the internal threat bolsters overall security by making it almost impossible for hackers to gain a foothold.”

Administrators and super user accounts are extremely powerful, allowing so-called 'privileged' users to anonymously log on and gain complete control over the target system with full access to all information and infrastructure.

The security threat posed by insiders was recently highlighted in a survey for the UK Government's Department for Business Innovation and Skills conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), a multinational professional services network, which found that 30 per cent of the most damaging data breaches were as a result of those already inside the company.

Gulf Air has implemented Wallix AdminBastion to ensure that only approved administrators and third party vendors can access the systems. The solution makes it simple for users who need access to easily request it and information security professionals to not only see active sessions but also easily revoke or limit access. – TradeArabia News Service
